Speaking English is one of the most challenging skills for speakers speaking English as a foreign language (EFL) learners, especially when they feel nervous or scared. This nervousness, known as language anxiety, usually occurs when students show lack of confidence in public speaking, answering questions, or giving presentations in English. This anxiety can negatively affect students' performance and learning. The objective of this study was to determine the level of English speaking anxiety in EFL learners at the Technical University of Cotopaxi. This research followed a quantitative approach with a descriptive design. A total of 137 first- to fourth-semester students from the Pedagogy of National and Foreign Languages career participated. Data were collected using a 17-item survey based on Yaikhong and Usaha's (2012) Public Speaking Classroom Anxiety Scale (PSCAS), which uses a Likert scale. The results showed that most students experienced a medium level of public speaking anxiety. The main problems related to anxiety during oral communication were communication apprehension (CA) which was the highest category with 49.82%, then there is test anxiety (AT) with 44.28%, next the fear of negative evaluation (FNE) with 42.57% and finally there is Comfort speaking English (CSE) with 33.57% being this the lowest category. In addition, it was found that teacher behavior and the classroom environment directly influence students' anxiety levels. It suggested the importance of implementing strategies that foster a positive and conducive learning environment to reduce anxiety and improve students' oral participation in English.
