(Ecuador : Pujilí : Universidad Técnica de Cotopaxi (UTC), 2025-02) Puca Jiron, Ariana Abigail; Venegas Alvarez, Gina Silvana
Oral participation in the acquisition of English as a foreign language is essential, because it facilitates communication both in the academic environment and in the communicative environment. The objective of this study was to determine the factors that affect oral participation in the students of the Second Cycle of the Technical University of Cotopaxi. The problem lies in the lack of oral participation of students, which negatively affects their academic performance and the development of their language skills. The methodology used was based on a quantitative approach, with a descriptive design, in addition, a survey was used as a technique, and a questionnaire as an instrument, which consisted of 22 questions on the Likert scale. The research involved 38 students from the Pedagogy of National and Foreign Languages (PINE) program. The findings revealed that fear of making mistakes, lack of confidence, and teacher motivation negatively affect oral participation. It was also found that a representative number of students are afraid to participate in class, experience nervousness, and lack peer support. In conclusion, students' oral participation is indispensable for language learning; however, the pedagogical, social, individual, and psychological factors that affect participation can provide valuable information for both teachers and students. Finally, this research contributed to identifying barriers to oral participation in order to improve the process of teaching English as a foreign language.

Reading comprehension is important for EFL students, as it directly influences their academic performance and language proficiency. The objective of this study was to determine the use of the SQ3R method to improve the reading comprehension of fifth-semester EFL students at the Technical University of Cotopaxi. A quantitative research approach with a descriptive design was used. For data collection, a survey was used as an instrument, consisting of thirteen questions on a nominal scale. These were divided into three geographical questions, two multiple-choice questions, and eight closed questions, in which students could justify the answer. These questions were examined using a trend analysis. Thirty-three students between 17 and 34 years of age from the Pedagogy of National and Foreign Languages (PINE) program participated in the study. In the findings, it became evident that the students know various reading methods and strategies, as well as the importance of these to improve their reading comprehension. In addition, a large part of them consider that their reading comprehension level is not adequate. It was also identified that most of the students have not received any orientation on methods and strategies that contribute to improving this skill. However, it was concluded that all students are unaware of the SQ3R method, despite this, they show interest in learning about it and applying it, which makes its implementation feasible to strengthen reading comprehension.

To achieve this effect, the proposal was supported in the qualitative investigation, the applicability and functionality of the methods and techniques that were used allowed obtaining some knowledge of the real situation. The validity and reliability were certain under the support of the instruments that were applied. The investigation was developed in the "Primero de Abril" National School of Latacunga city. Authorities, teachers and students were considered for it. Unfortunately, a technical evaluation process that allows obtaining information about the development of the communication in English does not exist, but it is determined at the same time, the great interest that exists to contribute to the improvement of this one. The proposal consists on valuing the different levels of progress in the development of the mentioned abilities in the students through the application of evaluation instruments with the purpose of taking the necessary correctives on time, with the security of increasing the interest both teachers and authorities, since it represents a contribution guided to raise the quality of education in all who are part of the "Primero de Abril" National School
