    Análisis del índice de selección del programa de mejoramiento genético sostenible de bovinos de leche de la parroquia Aláquez, en el periodo 2023.

    In the Aláquez prish, located in the Latacunga canton, Cotopaxi province, a study was conducted to evaluated the impact of the genetic improvement program on local milk production, This parish is experiencing a decline in the productive efficiency of cattle, affecting daily weight gain and milk production, which compromises the local livestock profitability. This program aims to increase the profitability of milk production. The research focused on a sample of 96 cattle belonging to 13 producers in Aláquez. Data was collected on production costs, lactation duration, milk quality, and comprehensive management practices were implemented, such as deworming, vaccination, and vitamin supplementation. The main objective of the research is analyze the selection index used in the sustainable genetic improvement program for dairy cattle in the Aláquez parish. The results indicated an estimated breeding value for daily weight gain of 237.21 grams for future generations, suggesting an opportunity to increase productive efficiency. Additionally, the average milk production was 1893.56 liters per lactation, with a density of 1.028 g/ml. The cost of producing a liter of milk was $0.15, indicating an efficient cost structure. However, both weight gain and milk production show considerable room for improvement, highlighting the importance of continuing to optimize management practices and genetic strategies in the area
