he preservation of local genotypes and the sustainability of backyard poultry farming have been underexplored aspects in previous research. In this context, the present study was conducted with the aim of characterizing the backyard chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) husbandry system in the Latacunga Canton and contributing to the knowledge and preservation of local poultry practices. The study was carried out in the rural parishes of Mulaló, Guaytacama, and Toacaso. A total of 93 producers were surveyed, and key aspects such as management, feeding, animal health, and reproduction were analyzed. Through multiple comparisons and descriptive analysis of categorical variables, it was evidenced that the system is predominantly managed by women (67.7%), while men represent only 32.2%. The majority of breeders are between 30 and 50 years old (53.8%). Chickens are mainly raised for self-consumption (76.3%), and 88.2% are fed whole corn. Only 19.4% use nutritional supplements, reflecting a low level of technical advancement among the owners. Deworming and vaccinations are uncommon, with only 16.1% employing these practices. A significant 83.9% do not implement any sanitary management or preventive measures, which could adversely affect the health and welfare of the chickens. These factors underscore the importance of implementing training and support programs aimed at improving and advancing biosecurity measures in poultry, thereby ensuring the sustainability and efficiency of the local poultry system.
