    Diagnóstico de la población de alpacas (vicugna pacos), estructura de rebaños y practica de manejo en la provincia de Cotopaxi.

    Raising alpacas (Vicugna pacos) in the province of Cotopaxi is a fundamental activity for local communities, since it not only represents a source of subsistence for peasant families, but also a means for the conservation of the Andean paramo. Although current data on the alpaca population is scarce, with the latest official records from 2017, visits were made to the communities to evaluate the living conditions of these animals and surveys were carried out with the presidents of the alpaca associations. It was determined that the alpaca population in the province has decreased significantly, with only 291 alpacas in 10 communities, distributed among 56 males, 195 females and 40 babies. Among the causes of this decline are the presence of feral animals, lack of leadership, diseases, and internal conflicts. Two surveys were carried out: one social and another on production systems.
